Woot! Sydney's got StreetView now.
Check out http://maps.google.com.au, click the StreetView button, and start exploring Sydney.
Looking forward to the first "discoveries" people do.
EDIT: Let me correct this: it's the whole of Australia on StreetView (well, most of it, no Uluru though)! Amazing.
Dress up for summer as Google Street View is coming to town! A Google branded car (although a pretty small label) has been spotted and snapped. Google Street View raises privacy concerns, but since all is happening out on the streets, in public, anyway, when would it be a privacy issue? It is a cool feature, for house hunters as well as tourists, and I bet some pretty interesting mash-ups will surface over time. Hopefully they don't stuff it up like with the Australia Day fly over though. And when will they fix the CBD satellite images anyway?
Let's hope it's going to be a hot summer...
10 cities, one world, one company: Google.
Sydney is up first, with some exclusive announcements, hours before the rest of the world hears about them.
700 registered users for the Google Developer Day 2007, the 2nd largest event today.
Google going offline with Google Gears: gears.google.com
Have the power of a full SQLdatabase at your fingertips for use online and offline, using SQLite. With automatic syncing, autoupdate, text search,... Gears also adds threads to JavaScript, making it ever more powerful.
Google Mapplets:
Mashup Google Maps itself, add your own mini app to Google Maps (and not the other way round, adding Maps to your app) as Mapplets. That way users can aggregate different data (using several mapplets) on one view in Google Maps. It also brings back the users to Google Maps, as they kind of lost them to the sites which integrate Maps.
API Overview by Bo Majewski
A general overview of the Maps API, about 23 demo's, without a glitch. Google is open sourcing the GMaps Utility Library, so everyone can improve on the Marker Manager; you can now add driving directions to your own mashup, and there's a limited availability of traffic overlay data.
Soon you'll be able to add AdSense for Maps to your own Maps mashup, enabling you to monetize on your application (and Google too of course).
What's wrong with those lanyard things? Your name tag is always turned around. Maybe they should just print your info on both sides...Just got a notification from Google about the Australia Day fly-over:
"Australia Day is over, but the hi-resolution photography we took in Sydney Harbour during the celebrations is now live on our site. As you may know, Sydney was the first city Google chose to undertake an initiative like this at such a grand scale. While we couldn’t reach everywhere we’d hoped, we captured some great imagery and want to thank everyone who participated for helping make this celebration so much fun. We hope you’ll take a look, explore and re-live the day with us."
Well, it looks terrible. Not because we're not on it (and we we're certainly there when they flew over), but it's so patchy.
Look at the Opera and surroundings, and I think there were a lot more boats around, and people. People were having a party on the roof of our building -- I see no-one there (or maybe 3 dots, indistinguishable). It's a big disappointment.
Anyone else?
Google has upgraded it's Australian mapping site with driving directions and business listings, which puts it on the same track as WhereIs.com. Looking for a street "sussex street sydney 2000" or hotel "hotels near sydney"?
No word on the upgraded Australia Day pics though.
Which one do you like the most, Google Maps or WhereIs?
"Google Australia is celebrating Australia Day 2007 by photographing Sydney Harbour from the air, and we want to make sure as many of us as possible squeeze into the picture."
Next Friday, an aircraft hired by Google will be doing a series of low-level swoops over parts of Sydney, photographing the ground and waters below. And they ask you to take part.
"So when you see the Google branded plane flying overhead this January 26th, hoist a sign, arrange your family into a fun formation or just get a bunch of friends together to wave."
Six weeks later you may appear on Google Maps!
