Noticed Google Maps put up new, sharp images of Sydney CBD, after they blurred it earlier last year for the Apec summit.
I also noticed an accident in Circular Quay...
Dress up for summer as Google Street View is coming to town! A Google branded car (although a pretty small label) has been spotted and snapped. Google Street View raises privacy concerns, but since all is happening out on the streets, in public, anyway, when would it be a privacy issue? It is a cool feature, for house hunters as well as tourists, and I bet some pretty interesting mash-ups will surface over time. Hopefully they don't stuff it up like with the Australia Day fly over though. And when will they fix the CBD satellite images anyway?
Let's hope it's going to be a hot summer...
Just got a notification from Google about the Australia Day fly-over:
"Australia Day is over, but the hi-resolution photography we took in Sydney Harbour during the celebrations is now live on our site. As you may know, Sydney was the first city Google chose to undertake an initiative like this at such a grand scale. While we couldn’t reach everywhere we’d hoped, we captured some great imagery and want to thank everyone who participated for helping make this celebration so much fun. We hope you’ll take a look, explore and re-live the day with us."
Well, it looks terrible. Not because we're not on it (and we we're certainly there when they flew over), but it's so patchy.
Look at the Opera and surroundings, and I think there were a lot more boats around, and people. People were having a party on the roof of our building -- I see no-one there (or maybe 3 dots, indistinguishable). It's a big disappointment.
Anyone else?
"Google Australia is celebrating Australia Day 2007 by photographing Sydney Harbour from the air, and we want to make sure as many of us as possible squeeze into the picture."
Next Friday, an aircraft hired by Google will be doing a series of low-level swoops over parts of Sydney, photographing the ground and waters below. And they ask you to take part.
"So when you see the Google branded plane flying overhead this January 26th, hoist a sign, arrange your family into a fun formation or just get a bunch of friends together to wave."
Six weeks later you may appear on Google Maps!

Additionally Microsoft does a flyover over Centennial Park to create a coloured map of Australia of the attending people.
