Sydney Morning Herald already picked up Meraki earlier in the year. But now they also pick up Free Sydney Wireless, and interviewed yours truly…
“Frustrated by the NSW Government’s stalled free wi-fi project, a group of Facebookers have decided to start their own.”
“Free Sydney Wireless’ next recruiting drive will be in March at Barcamp, an informal web developers’ get-together. “We will try to set up a wireless net at Barcamp using Merakis, in the hope that it spurs more people to install their own Meraki.”

A grassroots movement is setting up a Sydney-wide free wireless network. Well, that's the idea, but they need your help. You too can help make the network grow, by adding a Meraki repeater (US$ 49) to your home. In addition, if you have a broadband connection, and you never fully use your bandwidth, you could share your connection with the same Meraki device (the idea is that every couple of Meraki repeaters can wirelesly connect to a Meraki internet gateway). That way we could get Wifi for free across Sydney, without councils spending taxpayers money. Because we would pay ourselves. Actually the only expense would be the Meraki device, because we already pay for the internet connection (which we would then share).
In times when people are looking to save money, an internet connection may well be on the list of things which might get canceled. If a more fortunate neighbor would share their bandwidth, people wouldn't need to give up internet access (although maybe tune it down to just necessary communication). If you're on Facebook, check out the Free Sydney Wireless group or check out the blog.
