Opening this weekend in Sydney at the Dendy cinemas, the In Bruges movie. Features Colin Farrell, Ralph Fiennes and Brendan Gleeson. A cool, little movie, in a cute little Belgian town (my previous home town). Check out the story at Dendy and go see it!
The AP writes "Quirk in Belgian law drives iPhones near $1,000". The article compares it to the AT&T locked in price of $299, which isn't fair though. They should compare it to the unlocked price of about $550. Still a big difference, and 21% VAT/GST doesn't help either. The thing is, in Belgium it is not allowed to sell one service or device only linked to another service or device. Both services or devices need to be available separatly. But the difference with other European countries, which offer similar consumer protection, is then that they can sell a device (at $1) linked to a service while also offering the device and service separatly at full price. The full price of an unlocked 16GB iPhone in Australia would also be about $900 AUD.
Yesterday was "Russian Dolls" on SBS (a repeat), a Flemish television series. I had heard that it had been on on SBS before but I didn't see it. SBS does progam quite a lot of European series, but a Flemish series is, well, I think, exceptional. Flemish is only spoken by 6 million people (the northern part of Belgium). And, although very similar to Dutch, "Russion Dolls" is in an Antwerp Flemish dialect which might also need some subtitles in the Netherlands even. I never did see the series back in Belgium. It did get good reviews. I think I only ever saw like 30 minutes of it, and yesterday I saw the last 10 minutes of the same 30 I saw before... The original title is "Matrushkas", which would be a perfect title anyway, as that's the actual Russian name for "russian dolls". Why did they need to translate it? It's not your everyday crimi series, it's about trafficking Russian girls as prostitutes in the Antwerp region.
Anyway, I was just curious if anybody else in Australia has seen it and what they think of it.
Colin Farrell (Miami Vice remake, Phonebooth etc) and Ralph Fiennes (The English Patient, and euh, the mile high club) are filming the movie "In Bruges", our former hometown in Belgium, right in the neighbourhood were we used to live.
"IN BRUGES is the darkly comedic tale of the fates of hit men Ray and Ken (to be played by Mr. Farrell and Mr. Gleeson, respectively). After a difficult job in London, the team is ordered by their boss Harry (Mr. Fiennes) to cool their heels in Bruges. Very much out of their comfort zones, the men find themselves drawn into increasingly dangerous entanglements with locals, tourists, and a film shoot. Soon, their perspectives on life and death are violently skewed."
